Tuchel Stands Firm on England's Style Ahead of World Cup Opener

Thomas Tuchel, the head coach of England, has firmly stated that he is "not ready to adapt" the team's playing style for the World Cup, despite the challenging heat conditions in the USA. He believes that altering their approach would mean sacrificing the strengths that define the squad. Since taking over in January 2025, Tuchel has emphasized the importance of maintaining the physical style characteristic of English football.

As the national team prepares for their first match against Croatia on Wednesday, Tuchel highlighted the qualities of his players, describing them as "active with the ball," "courageous," and "brave." He is determined to stick to their established style, stating, "So let’s go for it. I mean, no one guarantees you that we win. So we want to at least try it, our style and our belief."

The extreme temperatures during the World Cup have prompted the introduction of mandatory hydration breaks, which Tuchel noted could "change the character of each half." He recognized that these breaks provide opportunities for coaches to adjust strategies and communicate with players. With temperatures expected to exceed 30°C in Dallas during the opener, Tuchel expressed confidence in playing at the air-conditioned Dallas Stadium, which could mitigate some of the heat's effects.

Though he acknowledged the impact of the heat on training sessions in Kansas City, he remains resolute in his approach. "I’m just not ready to adapt into a different style of football because of circumstances that we cannot influence. I think we would just give up our strengths," he remarked.

Tuchel’s experience from last year’s Club World Cup has informed his preparation for the World Cup. He noted that while conditions may affect the volume and intensity of play, the core style remains intact. "In the end, we need to have an answer anyway to every scenario," he added, indicating that flexibility in tactics will be crucial as they face varying challenges throughout the tournament.
