⚾BASEBALL - Division I

Cody Van Wormer, North Kingstown Baseball

North Kingstown 3, East Providence 2

One key inning offensively and three effective pitchers on the mound was the right equation for the Skippers, who sprung an upset on the Townies to end the regular season at Lischio Field.

🥎SOFTBALL – Division I

Skylar Hawes, Pilgrim Softball

Pilgrim 8, Prout 7

Skylar Hawes continued her power surge and the Patriots held off a late rally to down the Crusaders, 8-7.

The All-State outfielder started the day with a bang, hitting a two-out home run in the first inning to get Pilgrim going. Prout played long ball in the second, getting a Charlotte Smith home run to tie the game at two before Sara Slitt’s three-run bomb made it 5-2.

It didn’t take long for the Patriots to answer, getting two runs in the third before taking the lead in the fifth on a Crusader error and a sacrifice fly by Hawes. Up 8-5 heading to the seventh, Prout scored a run on a wild pitch and a two-out single by Lily Sheehan, but Gabriella Santiago was able to induce a popup to end the game.

Hawes and Natalie Fratus both had two RBI for Pilgrim and Santiago also hit a home run in the game while throwing a combined 5 1/3 innings of three-hit ball, giving up one earned run with 11 strikeouts.

Slitt had another big game for the Crusaders, going 2-for-4 with the home run, three RBI and three runs.

Pilgrim is now 7-11 and in 10th in the Division I RPI standings and plays its regular-season finale Wednesday at home against La Salle. Prout ends the season with a 9-11 record and is ninth in the Division I RPI, but could swap places with Pilgrim depending on the outcome of the Patriots’ game.

The Townies scored runs in every inning and put up a football number in a 20-8 win over the Quakers.

East Providence scored two runs in the first inning and got two more on a Maura Roche home run, then scored four in the third and three in the final four innings. Moses Brown put up seven in the fourth, but couldn’t match the consistency of the Townie offense.

Roche had herself a day, going 2-for-4 with the home run, four RBI and two runs and Trinity Provencher went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs. Audrey Bernard and Ava Silva scored three times and had two RBI and Marianna Pina also scored three runs. Avery Duarte, Ella Grimley and Caroline Welch scored two runs apiece in the win.

Elodie Cannon put up numbers for the Quakers, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Abigail DeWolf hit a home run and had three RBI in the loss.

La Salle 4, Coventry 1

O’Reilly looked like a veteran from start to finish, bouncing back after giving up one run in the second inning to completely flummox Coventry. She threw all seven innings for la Salle, giving up five hits with one walk and struck out eight batters.

Tied at one, the Rams took the lead for good when Samantha Sell led off the second inning with a solo home run. Nikki Pallotta added to it with a two-run home run in the fourth.

Cumberland 18, Fitch 13

Cumberland remembered to bring its bats to Connecticut and wasted little time in showing them off as Myla DeMartino led off the game with a home run and things took off from there. The Clippers scored four in the first, five in the second and went up 13-3 after the third. Fitch tried to come back, but Cumberland added four more in the fifth to get the lead beyond comfortable.

Abby O’Connell and Kenzie Lavelle both had three hits and four RBI for Cumberland. Cadence Hebert finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs and Madelyn Casavant had two hits, two runs and two RBI. DeMartino had the homer and scored two runs and Emma Cruise went 3-for-5 with three runs in the win.

Cumberland improved to 3-17 and wraps up the regular season with a unique doubleheader on Wednesday, first hosting Chariho before playing Westerly right after.

🥎SOFTBALL – Division II

Kayleigh Gouchie, Lincoln Softball

Lincoln 3, North Kingstown 1

A day after losing their first game of the season, Kayleigh Gouchie and Molly Ganim made sure there wasn’t a second as the duo combined on a one-hitter in a 3-1 win over the Skippers.

On Monday Lincoln lost to Division II foe Johnston and didn’t have an easy follow-up with Division I North Kingstown.

Gouchie and Ganim’s efforts certainly helped. Gouchie got the start and threw 4 1/3 innings of one-hit ball, giving up an unearned run while striking out seven. Ganim came on in the fifth inning and dominated in 2 2/3 inning of relief, striking out seven of the eight batters she faced.

Tied at one, the Lions led off the foruth inning with singles by Lucia Whyte and Annika Sampson. The Skippers had a miscue in the field that allowed Lincoln to score the go-ahead run and a Mykiah Oldham sacrifice fly made it 3-1.

Sampson led the Lincoln offense with two hits. The Lions are now 16-1 and wrap up the regular season on Wednesday at Ponaganset.

Kylah LeComte had the lone hit for North Kingstown, which finishes the season 16-3 and will end up as the No. 4 or No. 5 seed in the Division I playoffs.

Scituate 14, Cranston East 4

Izzy Rotondo got it done in the circle and at the plate to lead the Spartans to a 14-4 win over the Thunderbolts.

The weather was hot, but it was Rotondo who was cooking. The sophomore threw four innings of two-hit ball, giving up one run and striking out nine while helping her own cause with a 3-for-3 performance at bat with two runs and one RBI.

Addyson Shields came up big for Scituate, going 2-for-4 with four RBI. Sophia Maggiacomo and Katelyn Chatelle both had two hits and scored two runs in the win.

Aniah Parker had an RBI triple and scored one run for Cranston East, which fell to 11-8 overall and should end up as the No. 3 seed in the Division III playoffs.

With the win, Scituate ends the season 4-11 and should be in the Division II playoffs as the No. 11 seed.

Barrington 15, South Kingstown 0

The Eagles offense continued to peak at the right time, putting up double-digit runs for the third straight game in a 15-0 win over the Rebels,

Maya Etheridge and Grace Fontaine continued to destroy pitches, as both hit home runs and put up absurd numbers for Barrington. Etheridge went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs and Fontaine went 2-for-5 with four runs and two RBI.

The hitting didn’t stop there. Aubrey Paxton went 3-for-3 with two RBI and threw a two-hit shutout in the game that stopped after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Barrington is now 9-7-1 and in fifth in the Division II RPI. The Eagles will welcome East Greenwich to the East Bay on Wednesday to finish a game that was tied at 11 through six innings, with the winner earning the No. 5 seed in the D-II playoffs.

South Kingstown ends the regular season with a 7-10 record and should be the ninth seed for the Division II playoffs.

Sophia Moreira, Kent County Softball

Kent County 2, Ponaganset 1

Sophia Moreira came up clutch when Kent County needed her most in a 2-1 win over the Chieftains.

Kent County’s Reagan Motta and Ponaganset’s Mattea Mello were having a nice little pitchers’ duel throughout the afternoon. The Chieftains took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a wild inside-the-park home run by Claire Barrett, but they couldn’t manage anything else off Motta or reliever Addison Eddy.

With Mello cruising, Kent County finally strung hits together to start the fifth on singles by Charlotte Horak and Sarah Payan. Mello retired the next two batters, but Moreira didn’t let the inning end there, ripping a triple to right field that brought home two runs.

Moreira’s hit was one of four on the day for Kent County. Motta pitched four innings of three-hit ball, striking out four, and Eddy threw the final three, giving up two hits while striking out one.

Mia Duncan had two hits in the loss and Mello threw six innings of four-hit ball, striking out seven for Ponaganset.

With the win, Kent County finishes the regular season with a 12-5 record and should be the No. 4 seed for the Division II playoffs. Ponaganset drops to 7-12 overall and seventh in the D-II RPI, but plays first-place Lincoln on Wednesday and could move up depending on its result and the resumption of the game between East Greenwich and Barrington.

🥎SOFTBALL – Division III

Lia Doster, Tiverton softball

Tiverton 12, Rogers 2

The Tigers showed they have no peers in the division, as a seven-run fourth inning led them to a 12-2 win over the second-place Vikings.

Tiverton has cruised in all its D-III games this spring and this was no exception. The Tigers led 1-0 after three innings before getting seven in the fourth, then walked off with the win after Brooke Sowa’s two-run single brought the 10-run rule into play.

Carlie Martin and Liliana Luis hit home runs for the Tigers and Sara Poland led the team with three RBI. Lia Doster earned the win, throwing six innings while giving up six hits and striking out eight.

The win makes Tiverton 17-2 on the season and it wraps up the season on Wednesday against Narragansett. Rogers ends the season 16-2 and is the favorite to make it to Rhode Island College as the other finalist in the Division III playoffs.

The Quakers ended the regular season with a bang as Sophia Mocco broke a tie with 4:40 left and Paige Mahon and the defense made sure the lead stuck in an 11-10 win over Acton-Boxboro on Senior Day.

Moses Brown had plenty of momentum heading into the playoffs and wanted to keep things going. The Quakers showed their usual balance on offense and while Jane Belsito and Samantha Mocco led the team with three goals apiece, it was Sophia Mocco – a senior – who took the clutch shot.

Sophia Mocco and Avery Butler both scored two goals and Goose Brousseau had the other tally. Meena Brosco had three assists and Mahon made eight saves in the win.

🥍GIRLS LACROSSE - Division III

Ponaganset 8, Pilgrim 3

A storm could only delay the inevitable as the Chieftains continued to dominate with defense and the offense showed its face early in an 8-3 win over the Patriots.

In a battle for the No. 3 seed in the Division III RPI standings, Ponaganset led Pilgrim 4-2 just before halftime when a lightning storm swept in and caused the game to be delayed.

Nothing changed for the Chieftains, who continued to find success on offense while goalie Kaelyn Souza and her defense didn’t let the Patriots get close the rest of the way.

Lana Hess scored three goals to lead the Chieftains and Melanie Brown had two goals in the win. Pilgrim got two goals from Talulah Latorella and the other from Keira Lindman.

With the win, Ponaganset closes the regular season with a 7-9 record and should be the No. 3 seed. Pilgrim finishes 7-10 and is currently fourth in the D-III RPI, but will have to see if East Providence can make up the difference in its final two games.
