Tulane mourns loss of football recruit. He was set to join program this week
Deontavis Cooper, a prospective player for Tulane Green Wave football, died over the weekend following a crash in Leon County, Florida.
Cooper recently graduated with the Class of 2026 at Thomas County Central High School in Georgia and was a star football player for the school's team, the Yellow Jackets.
Cooper was set to join Tulane's football program this week. "As an incoming member of the Green Wave, Deontavis exemplified dedication, resilience, and a positive outlook," said Tulane University Athletics in a statement.
What happened to Deontavis Cooper?
On Saturday, May 23, a sedan carrying three people, including Cooper, traveled onto the shoulder, struck a culvert, became airborne and hit a utility pole before overturning, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
Cooper was sitting in the backseat and was ejected from the vehicle. He died at the scene. The two other passengers were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Thomas County Central High School announced the death of Cooper on social media on Sunday, May 24.
"With heavy hearts we mourn the loss of 2026 graduate, Deontavis Jamario "Big Coop" Cooper. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and the many friends, classmates, teammates, and others who are grieving during this difficult time," reads the school's post.
Tulane Football also posted on social media regarding Cooper's death. "We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, coaches, teammates, and all who held him close. May you find comfort and strength during this challenging moment," reads the post.
