Twins blown out in Chicago

Final

White Sox 15, Twins 2

Starting pitcher performance

After giving up six runs — five earned — in his start to begin this road trip, rookie southpaw Connor Prielipp gave up another six runs on Wednesday.

The White Sox did a bulk of their damage on singles, collecting eight hits off Prielipp, seven of which were singles. They scored a pair of runs on a Sam Antonacci single, which deflected off Prielipp’s glove in the second inning. A leadoff walk came around to hurt Prielipp in the third and in the fifth, he was knocked out of the game as the White Sox put up five runs in the frame.

Player of the game

David Sandlin’s major league debut began with a called strike, which Twins designated hitter Byron Buxton challenged. Buxton was correct, getting the call overturned. He then hammered a low fastball out for his team-leading 17th home run of the season.

That was the only hit — or baserunner — Sandlin would give up in a stellar debut in which he limited hard contact and kept the Twins off the bases. After Buxton’s home run, Sandlin set down the next 18 batters he saw in order. He did all that extremely efficiently, requiring just 61 pitches to do so.

Key moment

It’s hard to pick just one because the White Sox were relentless against Twins pitching all night, scoring in all but two innings.

As part of their 18-hit night, they sent nine men to the plate twice. They scored five runs apiece in both of those innings. The fifth began with a leadoff walk and then saw the White Sox collect five singles before the inning ended. The seventh featured a Chase Meidroth grand slam, which was followed by Munetaka Murakami’s 20th home run of the year, and third in as many games against the Twins.

The 15 runs the Twins gave up matched their season high on the year. They also fell 15-2 earlier this month in Washington D.C.

Up next

The Twins have yet to announce their starting pitcher for Thursday’s game, the series finale, but have decided to push Taj Bradley back a day. The White Sox will send Davis Martin (7-1, 2.04 ERA) to the mound for the game, which will begin at 1:10 p.m.
