Twins Secure Reliever Justin Lawrence from Pirates in Cash Deal
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins made a strategic move on Monday night, acquiring right-handed reliever Justin Lawrence from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for cash considerations.
Lawrence, 31, struggled this season in Pittsburgh, recording an 0-2 record with a 5.32 ERA across 23 appearances. He was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Friday, prompting the Twins' interest.
Originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 12th round of the 2015 amateur draft, Lawrence made his MLB debut in 2021. He spent four seasons with the Rockies before being claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh in March 2025. Throughout his career, he has maintained a 5.05 ERA over 222 appearances, all in relief roles.
In 2023, Lawrence showcased his skills with Colorado, participating in 69 games and achieving a 3.72 ERA along with 11 saves. He notably excelled last season with the Pirates, allowing just one run in 17 2/3 innings, resulting in an impressive ERA of 0.51.
To accommodate Lawrence on their roster, the Twins will need to make a corresponding move prior to their game against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.
