Twins Send Simeon Woods Richardson Back to Blue Jays
The Minnesota Twins have traded Simeon Woods Richardson back to the Toronto Blue Jays, the team that originally drafted him, in exchange for cash considerations. Woods Richardson, who was part of the trade that brought all-star pitcher José Berríos to Minnesota in 2021, is returning to Toronto at the age of 25.
Woods Richardson's recent performance led to his designation for assignment by the Twins on May 30, following a challenging start to the season. He began the year in the starting rotation, making nine appearances but struggling with a 7.71 ERA. After a brief move to the bullpen, where he had two scoreless outings, he was called upon for a spot start against the Chicago White Sox on May 28, which did not go well, culminating in a 2 2/3 innings outing during which he allowed five runs.
Over his five seasons with the Twins, Woods Richardson recorded a 4.76 ERA. In 2024, he had a breakthrough moment, stepping into a starting role after Louie Varland faced difficulties at the beginning of the season. Now, he reunites with Varland in Toronto, where Varland has flourished as a top reliever.
Woods Richardson previously spent time in Triple-A last season, returning to the Twins with improved results. However, after showing promise in his first two starts this year, he struggled significantly, leading to his exit from the team. Now, he aims to revitalize his career with the Blue Jays.
