UEFA Dismisses Real Madrid's Appeal for Action in Negreira Case

Real Madrid's president, Florentino Perez, recently submitted a formal request to UEFA urging them to take action against Barcelona in light of the ongoing Negreira scandal. The situation revolves around payments made by Barcelona to José María Enriquez Negreira, who previously served as the vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees. Madrid officials are advocating for sanctions against their rivals, asserting that these payments reflect misconduct.

Barcelona, however, defends their actions, claiming that the funds were intended for referee reports and asserting that no wrongdoing occurred. In contrast, Real Madrid perceives themselves as a wronged party in this issue, seeking both legal redress and sporting penalties from UEFA.

Despite the urgency expressed by Madrid, UEFA has decided to reject Perez’s request for the time being. According to reports from Sport, the governing body stated that the dossier would not be considered valid until there is a resolution in the ongoing legal proceedings being handled by Spain's Prosecutor's Office.

UEFA has the ability to review the submission but will refrain from making any decisions until the Prosecutor's Office determines whether Barcelona has committed acts of sporting corruption, an accusation brought forth by Real Madrid and Perez. UEFA's decision to adhere to the legal process emphasizes their respect for the Spanish judicial system.

As it stands, Real Madrid may face a prolonged wait for any conclusions on this matter. The investigation by the Prosecutor's Office has been ongoing for over a year, and indications suggest that a resolution may still be some time away.
