UIC and NIU Conclude NCAA Baseball Seasons in Regional Tournaments
Northern Illinois University and the University of Illinois at Chicago have wrapped up their seasons in the NCAA baseball regional tournaments held this past weekend. NIU (36-19), which entered as the No. 3 seed in the Tallahassee Regional, achieved a historic victory on Friday by defeating the No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina 12-10. The Huskies established a commanding lead but had to fend off a late surge from the Chanticleers, marking the program's first win in the NCAA tournament.
The next match for NIU was postponed from Saturday to Sunday, where they faced No. 4 seed St. John’s. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they fell 21-8 despite a strong performance from designated hitter Marcus Romero, who hit two home runs. In their final game on Sunday night, NIU met top-seeded Florida State, ranked No. 10 nationally, and lost a tightly contested match 7-4 after 10 innings, with Florida State scoring three runs in the extra frame to secure their place in the regional final.
Meanwhile, UIC (27-29-1), competing as the No. 4 seed in the Atlanta Regional, faced a tough start with a 22-5 defeat against the highly ranked Georgia Tech, which holds the No. 2 spot nationally. The Flames battled back in their elimination game on Saturday, pushing The Citadel to extra innings, but ultimately lost 9-8. Ashton Kampa’s two home runs energized the Flames, including one that gave them a brief lead in the 10th inning. However, a two-RBI single from Zach Hunt sealed the victory for The Citadel, ending UIC's season.
