The Los Angeles Rams have made significant strides during the offseason, coming off a successful run to the NFC Championship game last year. With their sights set on the Super Bowl, the team has made bold moves to enhance their roster. Yet, some improvements may come from players already within the fold, particularly second-year standout Terrance Ferguson, who is poised for a breakout in 2026.

Ferguson, the Rams' top draft selection last year, had a slow start, taking five weeks before he received his first target. He concluded his rookie season with 12 receptions for 250 yards and three touchdowns over 14 games, with notable performances in the latter part of the season, including two touchdowns and 106 yards against the Chicago Bears in the divisional round. While these numbers may seem underwhelming for a second-round pick, Ferguson's potential is evident, especially as he continues to develop his chemistry with quarterback Matthew Stafford.

In 2025, Ferguson managed to catch only 12 of his 31 targets, resulting in a completion rate of 38.7%, with just one drop. Notably, he struggled in contested catch situations, converting only one of eight attempts, according to Pro Football Focus. In contrast, teammates like Puka Nacua excelled in this area, converting 63.8% of contested catches. Ferguson's ability to stretch the field, averaging over 20 yards per reception, indicates that as he receives more targets, a stronger connection with Stafford could elevate his game significantly.

Ferguson's versatility also positions him as a potential solution for the Rams' need for a reliable third receiver behind Nacua and Adams. Last season, he primarily operated from the slot but also lined up as a traditional tight end and outside receiver on various plays. This hybrid role has prompted the Rams to explore more tight end options, including drafting Max Klare, who resembles Tyler Higbee's playing style.

If Ferguson continues to evolve in this multifaceted role, he could become a significant offensive threat. The Rams' strategy of deploying multiple tight ends may create mismatches for defenses, allowing Ferguson to exploit deep coverage. As head coach Sean McVay strategizes to challenge opposing defenses, Ferguson's development could prove vital in unlocking the full potential of the Rams' offense in 2026.
