USC's Lincoln Riley Under Pressure Following Athletic Director's Playoff Expectations

Southern California's head coach, Lincoln Riley, is facing increasing scrutiny as he enters the new season. After signing a lucrative 10-year contract worth $110 million in 2022, Riley has yet to lead the Trojans to a College Football Playoff appearance, despite the upcoming expansion of the playoff format to include 12 teams in 2024. With a record of 35-18 at USC, his performance has been a point of concern for fans and management alike.

USC Athletic Director Jennifer Cohen emphasized the need for success in the coming season, stating, "The expectation has always been the same. That’s the thing, that’s the reason why I came here, is that the standard is high." Cohen articulated a clear vision, asserting, "We do expect to make the playoff. We do expect to have a championship run. We do expect to be competing for championships every single year.”

Riley is acutely aware of these expectations as he prepares for a challenging schedule in the Big Ten, which includes home games against formidable opponents like Oregon and Ohio State, as well as road games against Penn State and Indiana, the latter of which claimed the national title in 2025.

The pressure is mounting for Riley to improve upon previous seasons, especially since USC has not finished higher than a tie for fourth in the Big Ten since joining the conference. Given the significant financial investment in Riley's contract, the current performance levels are viewed as inadequate.

This season will be pivotal for Riley's future at USC, making every game critical as he strives to meet the high expectations set by both the athletic department and the fanbase.
