UWM Baseball Aims for NCAA Tournament Success After Historic Win
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team is looking to build on a remarkable recent victory as they prepare to face Central Florida in the NCAA Tournament. The matchup is set for May 30 at 7 p.m. CT and will take place at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama, with coverage available on ESPN+.
After clinching their spot in the tournament with an impressive eight-game winning streak, the Panthers (26-31) shocked the competition by defeating top-seeded Auburn 13-8 on May 29. This victory marked UWM's first win in the NCAA Tournament in 27 years.
The Panthers earned their place in this prestigious tournament by capturing the Horizon League title, highlighted by a dramatic walk-off home run from Joey Spence, a standout from West Bend East High School. The team is now in the winners bracket of the double-elimination regional.
Head coach Shaun Wegner is eager to harness the momentum from this historic win. "It's a story that hopefully on the national stage now people are becoming aware of it," Wegner shared with ESPN Madison. "We just want to do what's best for not only our athletic department and our program, but we do want to be known as Wisconsin's baseball team." Wegner's ambition reflects the team's commitment to representing their state and city with pride.
With excitement surrounding the team, including interest from Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy, the Panthers are determined to continue their journey in the tournament. The goal is clear: to make their mark and be recognized as a significant force in college baseball.
