Vancouver Goldeneyes Dismiss Head Coach Brian Idalski After One Season
The Vancouver Goldeneyes have decided to part ways with head coach Brian Idalski following a challenging inaugural season in the Premier Hockey Federation (PWHL). The announcement was made on Monday, marking a significant shift in the team's leadership as they look to redefine their future. General manager Cara Gardner Morey expressed gratitude towards Idalski, stating, “We thank Brian for his professionalism and commitment to the Vancouver Goldeneyes and wish him all the best moving forward.”
Idalski took the helm of the Goldeneyes in June 2025, bringing with him two decades of experience in women's hockey, including coaching at the professional level and leading the Chinese women's national team during the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Despite high hopes for the team's potential, which boasted notable players like Sarah Nurse and Sophie Jaques, the Goldeneyes struggled throughout the season, ultimately finishing sixth in the league standings.
The team did not meet the expectations set by analysts, who had predicted a strong performance based on their roster. The Athletic's Dom Luszczyszyn rated Vancouver's offensive capabilities as the best in the league with a remarkable offensive rating of 12.9—significantly higher than the champion Montreal Victoire's 2.2. However, the Goldeneyes ended the season with a disappointing win rate of just .411, far below their preseason expected win percentage of .560.
Throughout the year, Idalski emphasized the importance of establishing a tough on-ice identity for the team, similar to that of his college teams. Unfortunately, this approach did not resonate as expected, leading to inconsistent performances and a lack of strategic clarity on the ice.
Vancouver is not alone in its coaching overhaul; the Seattle Torrent recently announced the departure of their head coach, Steve O’Rourke, after a similarly disappointing season that saw them finish last. As the Goldeneyes prepare for the upcoming 2026 PWHL Draft, where they hold the first overall pick and the opportunity to select standout defender Caroline Harvey, the search for a new head coach to guide the team into the future begins. Other teams, including the Toronto Sceptres and Boston Fleet, also currently seek new coaches after their respective leadership changes.
