Veteran Rockies Reporter Patrick Saunders to Depart Denver Post
Patrick Saunders, a seasoned sports journalist for the Denver Post, has announced his upcoming departure from the publication, effective June 24, 2026. In a heartfelt message shared on X, he revealed that he accepted a buyout from the company. "Some bittersweet personal news. I’m leaving The Denver Post, having taken the company buyout. My last game is June 24. Too many people to thank here. I’ll miss so many, but especially @harding_at_mlb," he tweeted.
Starting his career with the Post in October 1998, Saunders initially reported on the Denver Broncos before shifting his focus to the Colorado Rockies in 2005. He briefly stepped away from this beat to serve as the newspaper’s online sports editor from 2010 to 2011. A proud Colorado native, he was named Colorado Sportswriter of the Year in 2018 and held the presidency of the Baseball Writers’ Association in 2017. Saunders is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Colorado, where he teaches journalism.
Reactions from the Rockies media community have poured in, with many colleagues expressing their admiration and gratitude. Troy Renck, a fellow journalist, remarked, "This one is tough. @psaundersdp hired me at The Daily Times-Call in 1996. My life and career have been better because of Patrick. He is a total pro in every way." Others echoed similar sentiments, with Danielle Allentuck noting the impact of his presence in the press box and Christian Saez highlighting the void his departure will create.
Saunders’ exit signifies not just a personal farewell but also a loss of valuable institutional knowledge within Rockies coverage. Known for his sharp questioning and insightful storytelling, he has made a lasting impression on the sports journalism landscape in Denver. The community looks forward to seeing what the future holds for him.
