Vic Purvis, Southern Miss Football Icon, Passes Away at 82

Vic Purvis, a legendary figure in Southern Mississippi football history and former NFL player, passed away on May 30 after a prolonged struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 82 years old. The Southern Miss football program expressed their condolences in a statement, saying, “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Golden Eagle Vic Purvis. Vic was an outstanding football player and radio analyst at Southern Miss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

A native of Puckett, Mississippi, Purvis made his mark as a dual-threat quarterback for the Golden Eagles from 1963 to 1965. Under the guidance of the esteemed coach Thad “Pie” Vann, he started nearly every game during his college career, leading the team in both passing and rushing at various points—a remarkable achievement for any athlete.

In his senior year, Purvis showcased his talent by rushing for 663 yards, totaling 1,495 yards throughout his time at Southern Miss. He also threw for 1,727 yards, with eight touchdowns and 21 interceptions. His standout performance against Memphis in 1965, where he rushed for 238 yards, remains etched in the school’s record books. During his tenure as a starter, the Golden Eagles posted a 19-8-1 record.

Following college, Purvis briefly played as a defensive back and kick returner for the Boston Patriots in the American Football League, where he appeared in 14 games. An injury ultimately cut his playing days short, but he soon transitioned to broadcasting. He joined the Southern Miss radio network in 1974, initially as a guest analyst, before becoming a staple for the next 41 seasons.

Throughout his broadcasting career, Purvis lent his voice to 471 football games, becoming a beloved figure in the Southern Miss community. He covered five conference championships and 17 bowl games before retiring after the 2014 season. His contributions to the sport were honored with inductions into both the Southern Miss M-Club Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
