Victor Wembanyama Reflects on Tough Defensive Challenge Against Knicks Ahead of Game 3

The New York Knicks have posed significant challenges for Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs during the NBA Finals. Throughout the initial two games of the series, the Knicks have effectively taken advantage of the Spurs' usually solid defense. While San Antonio had previously showcased a formidable defensive strategy in earlier matchups, their approach has faltered against New York's offensive prowess.

Wembanyama, utilizing his exceptional height and wingspan, has primarily been positioned as a zone defender in the paint. His presence typically deters opponents from attacking the rim. However, against the Knicks, he has found himself more engaged in defending against their perimeter shooters, often stepping away from the paint to close out on attempts from beyond the arc.

As the Spurs prepare for Game 3, Wembanyama discussed the difficulties faced while combating the Knicks' offensive threats. His all-around involvement has left little room for rest on the court. Yet, he remains undeterred, emphasizing his commitment to the team's goals. “The challenge has been mostly about will, the will to do it, and I feel like I’ll take a breather at the end of the season,” he stated.

Despite the Spurs' struggles, Wembanyama has been a standout performer, averaging 27.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks in the last two games. Although he missed a crucial shot that could have secured a win in Game 2, he maintains a positive outlook as they seek to rally back in the series.

“This is everything that I wished for,” Wembanyama expressed, underscoring his determination. “There’s really no reason to overthink it. This is what I’m built for.” He acknowledged past mistakes in Game 2 but is focused on learning from them instead of dwelling on them. “It felt like we did a lot of things wrong, but we were also relentless and kept pushing,” he added. Game 3 will take place at Madison Square Garden on Monday.
