Victor Wembanyama Takes Responsibility for Late Turnover in Spurs' Narrow Loss

In a heart-wrenching finish to their latest contest, the San Antonio Spurs fell 105-104 to the New York Knicks on Friday night, leaving them trailing 2-0 in the NBA Finals. Despite showing moments of promise, the Spurs were unable to maintain their composure and execution when it mattered most, allowing the Knicks to capitalize on critical opportunities in the final moments of the game.

Stephon Castle shed light on the unfortunate play that led to Victor Wembanyama's pivotal turnover. With the Spurs in a position to potentially secure a game-winning scenario, Wembanyama's misstep in the closing seconds proved detrimental. After Jalen Brunson missed a mid-range shot with about 13 seconds left, Wembanyama grabbed an essential defensive rebound and attempted to pass the ball to Castle, who was racing up the court. However, Castle was unaware of the impending pass, which hit him from behind and resulted in a crucial turnover.

Following the game, Castle elaborated on the sequence, stating, “I was looking at him when he first got the rebound and I just started to take off, trying to give him some space to dribble up the court. I didn’t see him throw it to me.” Despite the unfortunate ending, Wembanyama had a standout performance, scoring 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting, helping the Spurs mount a comeback from a 14-point deficit.

Wembanyama, however, did not shy away from accepting the blame for the turnover. He remarked, “I threw that one away. I messed up. The last three possessions are blurry. That’s the whole problem. I need to have more poise, more control over the game." He expressed his commitment to learning from the experience, saying, “Am I gonna regret it? Yes, of course. Am I gonna use that to fuel me and to fuel us? Absolutely.”

As the Spurs prepare for Game 3 in front of a challenging Madison Square Garden crowd, they will need to minimize mistakes if they wish to turn the series around. Wembanyama and his teammates are determined to bounce back and regain their footing in the Finals.
