Villanova beats high majors to the punch with offer to Mazari Browne

Look out, future. Kevin Willard and Co. are coming for you. Just days after extending an offer to class of 2029 phenom Mason Grivna, Willard and his staff spun the wheel back to 2028.

Villanova has jumped early into the class of ‘28, extending a scholarship offer to rising junior combo guard Mazari Browne. The 6-foot-6, 185-pound prospect out of West Nottingham Academy (MD) announced the news via social media:

Browne represents the archetypal long perimeter weapon the Wildcats love. With a massive frame for a young guard and explosive scoring instincts, he has already put together multiple 20-plus point performances this past season. While currently rated as a three-star recruit, his physical traits and high ceiling suggest a major ranking surge is on the horizon.

The Cats are officially Browne’s first high-major offer, getting in ahead of the impending blue-blood rush. Prior to Villanova entering the mix, his sheet consisted of mid-major offers from Fairfield and local Big 5 rival La Salle.

Securing early real estate with a kid like Browne is a smart play for the future backcourt. It gives the staff a critical head start before his recruitment inevitably goes berzerk. He’s still relatively unknown, but it’s been said he has a high ceiling, so that won’t last long.

It’ll be interesting to see how Browne’s recruitment plays out over the next year-plus as the ‘28 cycle heats up.
