Wade Meckler Shines with First Grand Slam as Angels Dominate Rays 14-3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — In a remarkable display of power, Wade Meckler achieved his inaugural grand slam in the major leagues, contributing to the Los Angeles Angels' impressive 14-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. Meckler launched the grand slam off pitcher Drew Rasmussen (4-2) during the first inning, and also added a single and a stolen base to his afternoon.
Mike Trout continued his stellar performance this season, hitting his 14th home run in the fifth inning. The Angels also saw Jo Adell and Oswald Peraza connect for back-to-back home runs in a seven-run ninth inning. Trout, who leads the league in walks, also walked twice and played a crucial role in three of the Angels' highest run total of the season. The loss marked only the second time Tampa Bay has fallen at home in their last 18 games.
The Rays initially took the lead with Yandy Díaz's 24th career leadoff home run, marking his second in as many games. However, Angels' starter Reid Detmers (2-5) managed to escape a bases-loaded situation in the first inning. Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero made an attempt to rally with a double in the third, but Detmers held strong, leaving Caminero stranded at second base. The Rays struggled significantly, finishing the game just 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position and leaving 11 men on base.
As the game progressed, four Angels relievers came together to limit the Rays to just one hit over the final four innings. In the seventh, Angels shortstop Zach Neto scored on a wild pitch from Ian Seymour, but not without incident; Neto was hip-checked and remained on the ground for several moments before being assisted off the field, though he walked on his own. His replacement, Nick Madrigal, faced an unfortunate incident in the ninth when a pitch ricocheted off his hand, prompting Adam Frazier to pinch-run for him.
Looking ahead, the Angels are scheduled to have right-hander Jack Kochanowicz (2-3, 4.99 ERA) pitch against left-hander Shane McClanahan (5-2, 2.52) in the final game of the season.
