The Golden State Warriors need all the frontcourt assistance they can get in the offseason.
Kristaps Porzingis is easily the most skilled big man Stephen Curry has played alongside in the Bay. However, the former New York Knicks center is also the most injury-prone center who’s shared the floor with Curry, and there’s a good chance Golden State will move on from him months after acquiring him from the Atlanta Hawks.
Considering the Warriors must think big moving forward, USA Today’s Marcus D. Smith believes that trading for a Philadelphia 76ers seven-time All-Star and MVP is a blockbuster move the franchise should consider.
“The Warriors need an inside presence, especially if they don't bring back Kristaps Porzingis,” Smith wrote last Friday. “Joel Embiid seems to be a name that people want to see in the Bay Area.”
The one piece of information Smith omitted is that Embiid is in the same league as Porzingis health-wise. After appearing in 66 games with Philadelphia in 2022-23, Embiid suffered significant injuries that sidelined him for 40% of the 76ers’ regular-season contests from 2023-26.
Knee, shin, and oblique injuries limited Embiid to 38 games this year, but he was an elite 26.9 points-per-game contributor (he also averaged 7.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game). Simply put, the 32-year-old is a multi-faceted 7-foot superstar with a lethal triple-threat arsenal in different areas on the floor and a proven rim protector.
However, the questions surrounding his availability should compel the Warriors to think twice about trading for him this summer.
