Wasatch Academy Coach Reflects on Isiah Harwell’s Journey to Gonzaga
GILBERT, AZ - Isiah Harwell, a shooting guard and wing from Wasatch Academy, recently caught the attention of Gonzaga fans after his transfer from the Houston Cougars. His high school coach, Paul Peterson, shared insights into Harwell's development during his time in Mount Pleasant, Utah, where he joined the powerhouse program in 2022 after previously playing at Century High School in Pocatello, Idaho.
Peterson described Harwell as a talented player who initially needed guidance to refine his skills. "He had all the physical tools," Peterson noted, emphasizing the learning curve Harwell faced during his sophomore year. As time progressed, Harwell transitioned from a young player to a more mature leader among his peers, demonstrating significant growth in his game.
Having coached several Division I and NBA players since joining Wasatch in 2018, Peterson highlighted Harwell's unique potential. "He brings that aggression and athleticism from that guard spot," he said, pointing out Harwell's impressive size and defensive capabilities, which are essential for success in the college game. With the recent departure of Jack Kayil from Gonzaga’s roster, Harwell is poised to step into a starting role.
Despite facing challenges at Houston, including an ACL injury that affected his playing time, Harwell's outlook remains positive. Peterson believes that with ample playing time at Gonzaga, Harwell will have the opportunity to showcase his skills and improve his draft stock as he looks toward the 2027 or 2028 NBA Draft. Currently standing at 6-6 and weighing 220 pounds, Harwell's versatility as a 3 and D player could be invaluable for Gonzaga in the upcoming season.
As Harwell prepares for his new chapter in Spokane, his coach's confidence in his abilities suggests that fans have much to look forward to in his collegiate career.
