A closer look at Washington vs. Minnesota

The Huskies are coming into the Big Ten Tournament having lost eight of their last nine games. However, just before that major funk ensued, coach Heather Tarr's team had swept the Golden Gophers in Seattle, and they should have an opportunity to get right on Wednesday.

Washington scored 21 runs during their three-game series in April, a number it took them the next seven games to replicate. Now, the Huskies will be looking for their first win in the Big Ten Tournament when it gets underway in College Park, Maryland.

Tarr's young lineup has seen a big step forward this season as its depth has returned, with freshman Kaycie Burdick and junior Giselle Alvarez both in the midst of breakout seasons around sophomore star and Preseason Second Team All-American Alexis DeBoer. Alvarez has established herself as one of the best third basemen in the country, leading the Huskies with her .379 batting average, 66 hits, 53 runs batted in, and 123 total bases, while her 15 home runs, 36 runs scored, and 1.122 OPS are all good for second on the team.

The winner will move on to face the No. 4-seeded Indiana Hoosiers on Thursday morning.
