Wheelersburg Softball Advances to State Final Four with Thrilling Comeback Victory Over Tuscarawas Valley
ATHENS — It seems the Wheelersburg Pirates’ softball team is once again proving why they are a powerhouse in the sport. Under the leadership of head coach Teresa Ruby, the Lady Pirates have made a name for themselves with multiple appearances at the OHSAA State Final Four. This past Saturday's OHSAA Division V, Region 19 Championship Game against the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans was a testament to their resilience and skill, culminating in a nail-biting 7-6 victory in extra innings.
Wheelersburg initially took control of the game, leading 3-0 as they entered the sixth inning. However, just when it seemed they were on the path to victory, Tuscarawas Valley mounted a comeback and took the lead with a two-out single from Hallee Borell, pushing the score to 4-3. The Pirates faced pressure as they needed to score to extend the game. In a dramatic turn, Ava Estep's baserunning allowed Mylee Jo Gleim to drive in a run with an RBI single, sending the game into extra innings tied at four.
As the game progressed, Borell struck again with an RBI double and Delaney Erickson added another run with a single, putting Wheelersburg in a tough spot as they trailed 6-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth. However, the Lady Pirates were not to be counted out. Jalynn Drake hit a critical two-RBI double, scoring Estep and Layna Howard, tying the game once more. Makenzie Mullens then stepped up, hitting an RBI double to left center that clinched the victory for her team.
This remarkable comeback secured Wheelersburg's seventh trip to the OHSAA State Final Four in just 12 years under Ruby's direction, solidifying their legacy in the Southeast District. Layna Howard, a sophomore, expressed her excitement about contributing to the team’s success, saying, “I've loved the opportunity to follow in my sisters' footsteps and help out my team.” Meanwhile, Drake, who played a pivotal role in the game, reflected on the thrill of the victory, stating, “This is probably the best feeling that I could imagine, other than winning the state title in 2023 and 2025.”
The Lady Pirates’ journey continues as they prepare for the challenges ahead at the state level, showcasing the strength of their tradition and the dedication of their players. With a strong foundation and a proven track record, Wheelersburg softball continues to be a force to be reckoned with in Ohio.
