Why Jack Campbell’s New Deal Could Be a Masterclass by Brad Holmes

The Detroit Lions made a major statement about their future this offseason by rewarding one of the cornerstones of their defense. All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell recently signed a four-year, $81 million contract extension that keeps him in Detroit through the 2030 season. The deal averages $20.25 million per year and includes $51.5 million guaranteed, proving just how important Campbell has become to Dan Campbell’s defense in such a short amount of time.

At first glance, some fans may look at the total value and wonder how Detroit will continue paying its growing list of young stars. But when you dive deeper into the structure of the contract, it becomes clear why this extension could end up being one of the smartest moves the Lions have made during Brad Holmes’ tenure.

The contract includes four void years, an $8.612 million signing bonus, and option bonuses of $11.89 million and $18.845 million. Campbell’s base salaries are surprisingly manageable for most of the deal: $1.26 million in 2027, $1.305 million in 2028, $15.15 million in 2029, and $2.75 million in 2030. That structure gives Detroit incredible flexibility over the next several seasons.

More importantly, it all but guarantees the Lions will have room to continue extending other young stars such as Brian Branch, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Sam LaPorta. Instead of putting themselves in a difficult cap situation immediately, the Lions are strategically pushing money into future years when the NFL salary cap is expected to rise dramatically.

That’s the key part of this deal many people overlook. By the time Campbell’s larger cap hits arrive in 2029 and 2030, the NFL could be operating under a completely different financial landscape. A new collective bargaining agreement is expected around 2030, and another massive television rights deal could send the salary cap skyrocketing yet again.

What looks expensive today may look like a bargain in just a few years.

Money in the future simply is not worth the same as money today because of how quickly the cap continues to rise. It’s similar to asking whether you would rather pay $10 million against today’s roughly $301 million salary cap, or spread that money out over several years with smaller cap percentages attached to increasingly larger league caps. The Lions clearly understand that philosophy and are using it to keep their elite core together.

And honestly, Campbell has earned every bit of it.

The former first-round pick turned himself into one of the NFL’s elite linebackers during the 2025 season. Campbell finished with a 90.2 overall defensive grade, ranking second among linebackers. He posted a league-best 93.0 run defense grade while also recording a respectable 71.4 coverage grade, ranking 12th at his position. Add in 68 stops, five sacks, three forced fumbles, two pass breakups, and only a 7.1 percent missed tackle rate, and it’s easy to see why Detroit prioritized getting this deal done early.

What stood out just as much as the contract itself was Campbell’s mindset afterward.

During his first media session since signing the extension, Campbell showed up wearing workout gear instead of a flashy suit, which perfectly matched the mentality Lions fans have come to love about him. He opened the press conference by expressing gratitude to the organization and everyone who helped him reach this point.

Campbell also addressed the criticism he received coming out of the 2023 NFL Draft. He mentioned seeing a CBS Sports story labeling him one of the worst picks in NFL history — something that clearly stuck with him. Rather than becoming bitter about it, Campbell used it as motivation.

Even after landing a massive extension, Campbell said he woke up feeling exactly the same. Stating “I’m still Jack Campbell.”

He still has work to do. He still wants to improve.

That mentality is exactly why Detroit values him so highly.

Campbell also provided insight on his comedic personality fans haven’t seen before during the press conference when he was asked whether Gibbs saw some of the negative draft grades from the Lions’ 2023 draft class.

“Probably,” Campbell joked. “That guy is always on his phone.”

Beyond the humor, Campbell made it clear that his top priority during negotiations was staying in Detroit. He said the city feels like home and emphasized that he believes in everything the organization is building.

“I don’t feel like I need to be the highest-paid,” Campbell explained. “I just wanted to be in the category of elite because I believe I’m an elite linebacker.”

That team-first mentality continues to define this Lions locker room. Campbell even joked that he owed an apology to linebackers around the league for not fully resetting the market because becoming the highest-paid player at the position was never his goal.

Instead, his focus remains on winning.

Campbell also credited head coach Dan Campbell, defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, and linebackers coach Shaun Dion Hamilton for helping mold him into the player he has become.

As for Detroit’s offseason additions, Campbell made it clear he is excited about the direction of the roster.

“Every person they brought in was brought in for a reason,” he said. “And every player they’ve brought in, I’ve been very impressed with.”

That should excite Lions fans even more. Detroit is not only keeping its core together — it’s building for sustained success. And with Jack Campbell now locked in long term, the heart of the Lions defense is not going anywhere anytime soon.
