Woodhaven Baseball Advances to State Semifinals with Strong Performances
Lucas Farner, a key player for Brownstown Woodhaven's baseball team, is on a mission to help the Warriors secure their first state championship. The junior, who has been surrounded by the sport's successes throughout his life as the son of head coach Corey Farner, played a pivotal role in the team’s recent victory over Warren De La Salle. On Saturday, June 6, Woodhaven triumphed 6-1 in the Division 1 quarterfinals held at Woodhaven High School.
In this crucial matchup, Farner delivered an impressive performance, pitching 6⅔ innings and allowing only one run before reaching his pitch limit. He also contributed offensively with two hits, assisting the Warriors in advancing to the state semifinals at McLane Stadium in East Lansing. “He's never won one and I wanted to be part of his first,” said Farner. “This is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, we can get it done next Friday.”
Earlier that day, Woodhaven secured a spot in the quarterfinals by narrowly defeating Birmingham Brother Rice 4-3 in the regional final. The Warriors faced an early deficit but rallied in the fifth inning, highlighted by a crucial two-RBI double from Cameron Thorning, a Wright State commit. “The top of the lineup did what it needed to against De La Salle and the bottom of the lineup did their job against Brother Rice,” noted sophomore Tristan Spencer, who also played a significant role on the mound.
After the victory against Brother Rice, the Warriors regrouped indoors to escape the sweltering heat while keeping an eye on De La Salle's game against Livonia Stevenson. Woodhaven came out strong in the quarterfinals, scoring four runs in the first inning against De La Salle, with Spencer hitting a two-run double that set the tone for the match. With 12 hits in total, the Warriors were able to maintain their momentum throughout the game.
“The start was really the difference,” Corey Farner remarked about the team's performance. As the season nears its close, the Warriors are eager to build on their hard work and dedication from the past months, aiming for two more wins and a championship trophy. “The goal six months ago was to go to McLane Stadium, and we did it,” Lucas Farner concluded.
