Xander Mercurius Shines in College World Series as Family Celebrates Milestone
OMAHA, NE — Xander Mercurius took to the mound and delivered an impressive performance, pitching for 7 ⅓ innings during Oklahoma's thrilling 4-3 victory over Georgia in the College World Series. In the stands, his mother, Christina Mercurius, stood proudly in Section 117 of the parents' zone, cheering him on while capturing the moment on her phone, occasionally wiping away tears. She focused on the jumbotron that displayed her son’s remarkable statistics: six hits, three runs, two walks, and a career-high nine strikeouts.
"It's just so surreal to see him from a baby to now in college,” Christina expressed to The Oklahoman, reflecting on the journey that brought her son to this pivotal moment at Charles Schwab Field, where 24,455 fans gathered for the game. With this victory, the Sooners are now just one win away from a shot at the championship series.
Christina recalled a heartfelt discussion she had with a young Xander, who expressed his dream of playing in Major League Baseball. Despite her attempts to highlight the challenges of making it to the big leagues, Xander remained undeterred. Now, just four starts into his collegiate career, he has made a significant impact, having pitched only 33 ⅔ innings during the regular season before stepping up as OU’s No. 2 starter in the NCAA Tournament.
In the postseason, Mercurius has teamed up with fellow freshman Cord Rager to deliver outstanding performances, combining for 14 ⅓ innings with two wins and 17 strikeouts against just three earned runs. Sooners coach Skip Johnson praised Xander's toughness and skill, noting, “His fastball command has been there for a while, he’s been up to 99 mph this year. He pitched a great game… He executed pitches when he had to execute pitches.”
Mercurius's fastball proved to be a decisive factor in the game, consistently reaching speeds between 93-95 mph, which left Georgia struggling to keep pace. Bulldogs coach Wes Johnson remarked, “Really dominated us.” After the game, Xander attributed his success to Coach Johnson, who he believes has been instrumental in his development, much to Johnson's modesty in receiving the compliment.
As they look forward to their next game against the winner of the Georgia-Texas matchup, Xander's family is reveling in the moment. His brother, junior right-hander LJ Mercurius, offered support and encouragement before the game, reinforcing Xander’s confidence to perform on such a grand stage. “It’s nothing other than special," LJ said, expressing admiration for his brother's journey. "To get to see him every day and come this far this year is awesome.”
In a setting filled with excitement and distractions, Xander has cultivated the ability to maintain focus, often engaging in self-encouragement as he pitches. He shares a special connection with his mother during games, frequently locking eyes with her as she cheers from the stands. “Now look at him,” Christina said, her eyes glistening with emotion. “In the College World Series as a freshman.”
