Yankees Achieve Remarkable Feat with Historic 13-Run Inning

The New York Yankees made history on May 31, becoming the first team in Major League Baseball to score 13 runs in a single inning while failing to score in any of the other innings during their game against the Oakland Athletics in West Sacramento. This extraordinary performance marks a unique achievement in the league's records.

The Yankees' monumental third inning not only set a record for the most runs scored in a game with all runs coming from one inning, but it also tied with two previous instances in MLB history: the Philadelphia Phillies in 2003 and the Atlanta Braves in 1972. Remarkably, the Yankees did not record a hit in the remaining seven innings of the game, emphasizing the singularity of their scoring.

In this record-breaking inning, the Yankees faced three different pitchers from the Athletics and managed to bat 18 times. Shortstop Anthony Volpe, who participated in the inning, described the experience as “crazy,” noting the rapid pace at which he had to prepare for his next at-bat.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this performance is particularly noteworthy as it is the highest number of runs scored in a single inning without any hits recorded outside of that frame since the expansion era began in 1961. Additionally, the first 12 batters for the Yankees reached base safely, tying the record for the most consecutive batters to do so at the start of an inning in this era.

Notably, even the legendary 1927 Yankees, featuring icons like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, never achieved such a feat of scoring 13 runs in a single inning. The franchise's previous record for runs in an inning stands at 14, set back in 1920. This latest accomplishment showcases the Yankees' ability to make history well over a century after their founding.
