Yankees’ Austin Wells Placed on Injured List Due to Cervical Headaches
NEW YORK — The New York Yankees' catching situation has taken another unexpected turn since late Friday night. After a disappointing loss to the Boston Red Sox, the team decided to send backup catcher J.C. Escarra to Triple-A. In his place, the Yankees promoted veteran catcher Ali Sánchez on Saturday afternoon, creating a catching duo of Sánchez and Austin Wells.
However, the situation shifted dramatically on Saturday night when Wells was placed on the 10-day injured list due to cervical headaches, just before rain delayed the game against Boston. With an immediate need for depth behind the plate, the Yankees quickly recalled Escarra, preventing him from departing New York.
Cervical headaches, as defined by the Cleveland Clinic, are caused by issues in the cervical spine, such as injuries, arthritis, or herniated discs. Symptoms often include sensitivity to light and sound, blurred vision, and mild nausea. Catchers are particularly vulnerable due to the physical demands of their position, frequently enduring impacts from foul balls and swings.
Manager Aaron Boone noted that Wells had reported neck discomfort leading to headaches shortly after Friday's game. Although he underwent tests with a neurologist that ruled out a concussion, additional evaluations on his neck are scheduled for Sunday. “Hopefully it’s short,” Boone said regarding Wells’ recovery, adding, “That’s the expectation, but he’ll have testing tomorrow.”
Wells has struggled this season, boasting a batting average of .166 and an OPS of .533, making the catching position a priority for the Yankees as the trade deadline approaches. Despite these challenges, Boone expressed confidence in Wells, stating, “I know we’re prisoners of the moment… but there is a really good offensive player in there.”
With Wells sidelined, Sánchez and Escarra will now split catching duties, though both have had lackluster offensive performances this season. As the Yankees continue to navigate their catching woes, the prospect of Ben Rice stepping in has been discussed, though general manager Brian Cashman indicated it’s not currently being considered. Boone added, “It doesn’t mean we won’t do it… but it’s not on the board right now.”
