Yankees Eye Cubs' Seiya Suzuki as Potential Replacement for Injured Aaron Judge

The New York Yankees have recently ascended to the top of the AL East standings, marking a significant improvement after a slow start to the season. However, the team is facing a considerable challenge following the injury of star outfielder Aaron Judge, who is set to be sidelined for an extended period due to a stress fracture in his rib.

Judge revealed that the injury, sustained while diving for a ball in late April, had been causing him discomfort for over a month. It was only when the pain became too severe last weekend in Sacramento that he acknowledged the severity of the situation. As reported by ESPN’s Jorge Castillo, the three-time American League MVP has not provided a timeline for his return.

In light of Judge’s absence, the Yankees may seek to strengthen their lineup before the trade deadline. According to Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy, one potential target is Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki. McAvoy emphasized, “With Judge out, the Yankees could use another star and Suzuki would easily fill that role.”

Acquiring Suzuki would enhance the Yankees' offensive capabilities and bolster their outfield depth. While the team could opt to remain inactive at the deadline, pursuing an outfielder seems to be a realistic option. ESPN's Bradford Doolittle noted that if the Yankees decide to make trades, they may also focus on adding a right-handed batter, a third baseman, and possibly some bullpen support for the playoff push.

Suzuki, a two-time Silver Slugger finalist, possesses the hitting power that the Yankees require in Judge's absence. Currently under an $85 million contract, he is set to enter free agency after this season, making him an attractive short-term acquisition for New York without the burden of a long-term commitment.
