Yankees Fall to Guardians 9-4 as Schlittler Struggles in Start

In a disappointing outing, Cam Schlittler had the weakest start of his season, contributing to the Yankees' 9-4 defeat against the Guardians on Tuesday evening. The absence of star player Aaron Judge, who was sidelined due to rib and shoulder discomfort, placed extra pressure on his teammates to perform.

Paul Goldschmidt stepped up significantly in Judge's absence, delivering a strong performance as the designated hitter. The former MVP went 3-for-4, including a two-run home run in the third inning that initially gave the Yankees a 2-1 advantage. He followed up with a crucial two-run single in the fourth, resulting in the Yankees leading 4-3 at one point. Goldschmidt was responsible for all four of New York's runs.

However, the Yankees' offense faltered elsewhere, with only Cody Bellinger adding two hits alongside Goldschmidt. The rest of the lineup struggled to connect, managing just three hits collectively and failing in high-pressure situations, going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position while leaving eight men on base. In contrast, the Guardians excelled with a 7-for-16 performance with runners in scoring position.

The Guardians quickly found their rhythm against Schlittler, who faced challenges from the start. Despite two impressive catches from Trent Grisham that preserved a clean first inning, the Guardians found their stride, scoring a run in the third and capitalizing on a two-run homer from Kyle Manzardo in the fourth. Schlittler’s inability to maintain the lead in the fifth allowed the Guardians to take control, leading to his exit after 4.1 innings in which he allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out three. His ERA increased to 1.89 with this performance.

The struggles didn’t end with Schlittler, as the Yankees’ bullpen also failed to keep the game competitive. Tim Hill allowed a run on three hits in his inning, marking a rough stretch where he has surrendered five runs in his last two outings. Camilo Doval entered in the eighth but faced trouble, eventually giving up a bases-clearing double to Travis Bazzana after striking out the first two batters.

Jose Ramirez was recognized as the standout player of the game, hitting three doubles and driving in two runs for the Guardians.

The Yankees and Guardians will continue their three-game series on Wednesday night, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Gerrit Cole (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will take the mound for New York, aiming to continue his strong performance against Gavin Williams (8-3, 3.07 ERA).
