Zohran Mamdani Accuses James Dolan of Disappointing Knicks Fans with Watch Party Cancellation
City Council member Zohran Mamdani has placed the responsibility for the cancellation of the New York Knicks Game 4 watch party squarely on the shoulders of James Dolan, owner of Madison Square Garden. The event was called off just hours before the Knicks were set to face the San Antonio Spurs, transforming what should have been a festive celebration into a contentious exchange between City Hall and MSG.
The timing of the cancellation was particularly painful for fans eager to gather outside the iconic venue. Mamdani asserted that the city had already granted permission for the gathering, which had been approved for up to 999 attendees. "MSG requested a permit for a watch party for 500-999 fans. We approved that permit for 999 fans," he stated in a post on X. He further added, “Mr. Dolan has now decided to cancel the watch party. I know this is breaking hearts across our city.”
This assertion came in response to claims that the city had obstructed the event, with Mamdani instead characterizing Dolan as the one who ultimately decided to pull the plug. The cancellation adds to a week filled with tensions surrounding the Finals, including security issues linked to former President Trump and disturbances during Game 3 that led to injuries and arrests.
As the conflict escalated, Dolan expressed frustration with city-imposed security measures, arguing that restrictions were stifling the celebratory spirit surrounding the team. In light of the chaos during the previous game, city officials had opted for a controlled, ticketed event rather than an open gathering. Despite the setback, Mamdani encouraged Knicks fans to remain resilient, stating, “But if there’s one thing Knicks fans don’t need permission for, it’s showing up for our team wherever we may be — no matter the block or the borough. Knicks in five.”
While the watch party may have been canceled, the dispute between Mamdani and Dolan appears far from resolved, as each side continues to point fingers over who is to blame for the disappointment of Knicks supporters.
