USMNT Gears Up with Full Roster for World Cup Challenge

IRVINE, Calif. — The atmosphere was electric on the training ground as players engaged with heightened intensity and clarity during practice at the Great Park Sports Complex on Tuesday morning. For the first time since Mauricio Pochettino took the helm of the United States men’s national soccer team nearly 20 months ago, every selected player for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup was present and fit, ready to work together without any injury concerns or management issues.

The U.S. squad has a mere 17 days to forge the teamwork essential for thriving in the notoriously demanding World Cup. With the recent return of center back Chris Richards from an ankle injury, Pochettino is focused on building the crucial chemistry necessary for a solid defensive strategy, especially after the U.S. conceded four goals in recent friendlies against Senegal and Germany. “Culture eats strategy for breakfast,” Pochettino remarked after their 2-1 defeat, emphasizing to his players that success hinges more on trust and unity than mere talent or tactical plans.

According to NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese, Pochettino's emphasis on teamwork has been clear: “Chemistry and teamwork matter more than anything else.” Freese acknowledged the coach’s extensive experience at the highest levels of the sport, noting how his focus on collaboration has inspired the team. Throughout the training sessions, veteran players like Tyler Adams actively engaged teammates, while the defensive unit, now complete with Richards, held discussions to refine their formations and tactics.

With the U.S. having struggled defensively in the absence of Richards, establishing a cohesive back line is of utmost importance before facing Paraguay in their opening match on Friday. Defender Mark McKenzie highlighted the purpose of their training sessions, stating, “We create different situations that we will face in a game to get the repetitions and that makes things a lot easier.”

Though 17 days may seem brief, a significant portion of the current roster has previous World Cup experience from Qatar in 2022, providing a solid foundation for the upcoming challenge. As the team prepares for their first match, the focus on chemistry will transition from a concept to a necessity, determining whether they can advance further in the tournament or face an early exit.
