Vlade Divac Reflects on Kobe Bryant's Impact and Legacy

In a significant move during the 1996 NBA offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers traded Vlade Divac, their starting center at the time, to the Charlotte Hornets to create room under the salary cap for Shaquille O'Neal. This deal brought the rights to a young Kobe Bryant, who had just been selected as the 13th overall pick straight out of Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania. Initially hesitant to leave the Lakers, Divac ultimately accepted the trade.

Speaking on Byron Scott's "Fast Break" podcast, Divac shared his thoughts on Bryant's enduring legacy. Describing Bryant in one word, he stated, “Greatness.” He elaborated on Bryant’s relentless work ethic, immense talent, and passion for the game, expressing gratitude for playing alongside him in Divac's final season. “I’m glad that Jerry [West] traded me for him,” he added.

Throughout his illustrious 20-year career with the Lakers, Kobe Bryant achieved remarkable milestones, including five NBA championships, 18 All-Star selections, and 12 All-Defensive Team honors. He also holds the record for the most career points scored by any guard in NBA history. Despite his impressive resume, Divac noted that some individuals continue to critique Bryant’s legacy, which he finds perplexing.

“I’m shocked that somebody would do that. Why? I have no idea. Usually what you cannot reach, you trash,” Divac remarked, expressing disbelief at the criticism aimed at Bryant. “If you see where he came from, what he achieved, what he went through. He’s my top-3 ever.”

Kobe Bryant tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash in January 2020, alongside his daughter Gianna and seven others. Nevertheless, his influence remains strong, inspiring not only NBA players but athletes across various sports. The trade that sent Divac to Charlotte in exchange for Bryant is often regarded as one of the most lopsided trades in basketball history, highlighting its far-reaching impact on the sport.
