FIFA President Addresses Visa Challenges for World Cup Participants in the U.S.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has addressed concerns regarding ongoing visa complications affecting players and officials traveling to the United States for the World Cup. He emphasized that FIFA does not possess the authority to override government decisions, clarifying that the organization is not “kings of the world.”

During a press conference in Mexico City on the eve of the tournament, Infantino remarked, “We try always to find solutions – always,” but reiterated FIFA's role as a sports entity rather than a governing body. He stated that the organization aims to assist but must respect governmental processes concerning entry approvals.

This statement comes in the wake of the U.S. denying entry to Omar Artan, a Somali referee scheduled to officiate at the World Cup, despite his valid visa. Infantino described this situation as “unfortunate,” though he did not provide specific details regarding the U.S. decision. Following this incident, FIFA removed Artan from the tournament roster.

Infantino's comments were made shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that his administration is focused on ensuring that “the right people” are allowed into the country for the World Cup. The FIFA President suggested that patience is sometimes necessary when dealing with visa issues, noting that “to immediately start screaming and shouting has the opposite effect” in resolving conflicts.

Despite the challenges, Infantino expressed no regrets about selecting the U.S. as one of the three host nations for the expanded 48-team tournament. This year's World Cup is particularly significant, as it marks the first time a host nation is engaged in an active conflict with another country, specifically the ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions.

Iranian players received their visas just ten days prior to their first match in Los Angeles, and Infantino clarified that FIFA is actively working behind the scenes to facilitate the participation of all teams. “It has been successful to bring Iran to play in America,” he noted, reaffirming FIFA’s commitment to navigating complex geopolitical landscapes.
