49ers Coach Reacts to Rams' Major Trade, Calls It a "Gut Punch"
The NFL landscape was shaken on Monday when the Los Angeles Rams made a stunning acquisition, securing two-time Defensive Player of the Year and seven-time All-Pro pass rusher Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns. The trade involved sending three draft picks and Jared Verse back to Cleveland, leaving many in the league, including San Francisco 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster, taken aback.
Foerster expressed his dismay on Tuesday, sharing his initial reaction to the deal. "I said to Kyle (Shanahan), it's kind of a little gut punch, at first," he remarked. "You feel like, 'Oh gosh.' Then you know, I woke up really early this morning, earlier than usual. I came in and just walked tape." He acknowledged Garrett's exceptional talent, stating that he will pose a significant challenge for the 49ers in their upcoming matchups.
In the wake of the trade, Foerster confirmed that he revisited film of Garrett to prepare for the challenges ahead. "I sure did," he said. "I just wanted to remind myself because it feels like it kind of came out of left field... You're sitting there saying, 'Oh, wow. What about this?'" He noted Garrett's previous effectiveness against the 49ers, highlighting that in the past three games with Foerster on staff, Garrett has recorded 10 tackles, five quarterback hits, and two sacks.
As San Francisco prepares for the new season, they will need to rely on star tackle Trent Williams to face off against Garrett twice this year. The 49ers will be looking to devise a strong strategy to counter the newly strengthened Rams defense.
