49ers' Division Dominance Reflected in ESPN's Football Power Index
The San Francisco 49ers are entering the 2026 season with a wave of positivity. With key players returning from injury and significant improvements made through trades, free agency, and the draft, the team is poised for success. As a result, the 49ers secured the fifth spot in ESPN's latest Football Power Index rankings.
In this initial ranking, the 49ers trail only the Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, and Seattle Seahawks. ESPN's Football Power Index, which assesses team potential based on various factors, indicates the competitive nature of the NFC West division.
According to Seth Walder from ESPN, the rankings are determined by combining win projections from betting markets with each team's schedule, while also considering differences between starting and backup quarterbacks and special teams ratings. These metrics are used in numerous season simulations to identify potential Super Bowl contenders.
Notably, three teams from the NFC West have made it into the top five, marking the first instance since 2022 that multiple teams from the same division have achieved this feat in preseason rankings. The Rams hold the highest Super Bowl probability at 46.0%, closely followed by the Seahawks at 27.8% and the 49ers at 26.1%.
This competitive landscape underscores the intensity of the NFC West, which has become a powerhouse in recent years.
