Alexander Rossi has confirmed he will compete in the Indianapolis 500 after revealing his recovery from his practice crash has progressed better than expected.

The 2016 Indy 500 winner faced an anxious wait after suffering a heavy impact during practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, creating immediate uncertainty surrounding his availability for the race.

Following continued evaluation from IndyCar medical staff throughout the week, Rossi was officially cleared to return to the cockpit ahead of Sunday’s Indianapolis 500.

Alexander Rossi says his recovery progressed quicker than expected

Rossi confirmed the physical discomfort following the crash had eased significantly by the time final medical checks were completed.

“The pain is minimal.”

The experienced IndyCar driver also admitted his recovery moved faster than he originally expected after the accident.

“Honestly, I’m surprised with how good I feel.”

Rossi’s return provides a major boost for Arrow McLaren ahead of one of the biggest races on the IndyCar calendar.

The incident also served as another reminder of the physical punishment drivers absorb during Indianapolis 500 preparation week, where practice speeds regularly exceed 230mph.

Rossi carries major Indianapolis experience into race day

Despite the injury concerns earlier in the week, Rossi now heads into race day carrying full medical clearance and extensive Indianapolis Motor Speedway experience.

The American remains one of the most established drivers on the current IndyCar grid around Indianapolis, highlighted by his famous rookie victory in the 2016 Indy 500 and several strong performances since.

Rossi’s quick recovery also removes the possibility of a late lineup disruption for Arrow McLaren heading into race weekend.

Several drivers have suffered heavy crashes during this year’s Indianapolis 500 build up, underlining how demanding the event remains despite continued safety improvements across IndyCar.

For Rossi, simply returning to the cockpit after the severity of the practice accident already represents an important victory before the race itself even begins.
