Arizona Cardinals Coach Mike LaFleur Emphasizes Rookies Proving Themselves

The Arizona Cardinals are nearing the end of their offseason training, wrapping up voluntary activities this week with organized team activities (OTAs) followed by a mandatory minicamp next week. Although the team has kept much of their plans under wraps, the media had limited access to just 30 minutes across three OTA practices, revealing an intriguing shift under head coach Mike LaFleur.

According to Donnie Druin from SI.com, none of the Cardinals’ rookies are currently integrated into the starting lineup. Notably, running back Jeremiyah Love and guard Chase Bisontis, the team's first two draft selections, are participating with the second-string offense. Meanwhile, quarterback Carson Beck, a third-round pick, is also positioned with the third team, alongside Gardner Minshew and Kedon Slovis.

This approach diverges from the previous regime led by Jonathan Gannon, where first-round draft picks typically secured starting roles right away during OTAs. Last season, for instance, tackle Paris Johnson and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. were quickly elevated to first-team practices. It seems that LaFleur is delaying rookie elevation until training camp, where opportunities for first-team action will be more accessible.

With the recent signing of veteran Tyler Allgeier, it is uncertain whether Love will secure the top spot on the depth chart when the season commences, but his involvement in the offense is expected to be significant. Currently, Isaiah Adams holds the position of first-team right guard, leaving the door open for Bisontis to challenge for that spot as training progresses.
