Mets Blank Padres with Stellar Performance from Christian Scott
June 5, 2026; San Diego, California, USA - The New York Mets turned the tables on the San Diego Padres Friday night, securing a commanding 5-0 victory at Petco Park. This win marks a significant turnaround for the Mets, who have recently found their stride, winning six of their last eight games, while the Padres continue to struggle, having lost 10 of their last 11 outings.
Christian Scott, the Mets' starting pitcher, was instrumental in the win, delivering an impressive 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball. The young Florida native faced some early challenges, allowing a base runner in each of the first three innings. However, he managed to evade danger each time, striking out key hitters and ultimately leaving the game with a solid performance at 98 pitches.
Scott's night came to an end after he walked Rodolfo Durán but struck out Fernando Tatis Jr. and forced a pop-up from Gavin Sheets. Manny Machado's single advanced Durán, but relief pitcher Huascar Brazobán stepped in to strike out Ty France, preserving Scott's shutout. Remarkably, Scott has now allowed just one run in his last three starts, showcasing his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Offensively, the Mets were led by Jared Young and Luis Torrens, both of whom hit home runs to fuel the team's scoring. Young kicked off the scoring with a solo homer in the second inning, launching a 422-foot shot off Padres starter Michael King. The Mets extended their lead in the fifth with Torrens’ two-run homer, marking his first of the season and putting New York up 4-0.
Despite a few missed opportunities, including a potential run that slipped away due to a fielding error, the Mets managed to add an insurance run in the ninth inning. AJ Ewing's single, followed by a successful steal of second and third base, set the stage for Brett Baty's RBI single. With Saturday’s matchup against former Met Griffin Canning on the horizon, the Mets look to maintain their momentum in the upcoming game.
