PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — DeWanna Bonner delivered an impressive performance, scoring a season-high 19 points to lead the Phoenix Mercury to a 78-72 victory over the Portland Fire on Friday night. The Mercury, who were missing key players Alyssa Thomas (left calf) and Kahleah Copper (left hip) due to injuries, improved their record to 4-8 with this win.
Bonner played a pivotal role in the game, hitting a crucial 3-pointer from the corner as the shot clock was expiring, which put Phoenix ahead 64-62. Jovana Nogic contributed to the Mercury's success by scoring their last field goal with 2:46 left on the clock, giving them a 68-67 advantage that they maintained until the final buzzer. In the closing moments, Phoenix excelled at the free-throw line, with five players combining to make 10 of 12 attempts, including a perfect 4 for 4 from Bonner. The team finished the game 19 of 22 from the charity stripe.
Noemie Brochant and Monique Akoa Makani each chipped in with 11 points for Phoenix, while Nogic led the team with six assists. For Portland (6-6), Sarah Ashlee Barker was the standout with 15 points and seven rebounds. Karlie Samuelson hit her first four 3-point attempts, ending the game with 13 points, while Teja Oblak added 11 points. The Fire struggled with 20 turnovers, which ultimately contributed to their defeat.
Looking ahead, the Mercury will face the Golden State on Tuesday night, while the Fire are set to play against Los Angeles on Sunday.
