Sporting Club Jacksonville Falls to Tampa Bay Rowdies in USL Cup, Debuts 16-Year-Old Talent

Sporting Club Jacksonville faced another setback in their season, as they were eliminated from the USL Cup tournament after a 2-0 defeat against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on June 6. Despite introducing their youngest player ever, the team struggled to find their footing in the match.

Sixteen-year-old Ethan Underwood made his debut for Sporting Jax, coming off the bench in the 66th minute to play on the left side of midfield. A product of Bartram Trail High School, Underwood joined fellow academy player Ethan Dudley, who started in central defense, marking a notable moment for the club's youth development.

The Rowdies, who currently sit at the top of the league, dominated the first half. After having two goals disallowed for offside and hitting the crossbar, they finally scored in the 35th minute when Charlie Ostrem assisted Sebastian Cruz. Just before halftime, Sporting Jax faltered again, losing possession and allowing MD Myers a breakaway goal, resulting in a 2-0 deficit.

Brian Schaefer, a former standout at Fletcher High School, played all 90 minutes for the Rowdies, contributing to their defensive effort by blocking a potential goal from Sporting Jax midfielder Piero Elias. Frustration mounted for Sporting Jax head coach Liam Fox, who criticized the "really, really simple goals" that led to their defeat.

Despite a recent scoring spree, Sporting Jax managed only three shots—none on target—while the Rowdies tallied 16. The team opted to rest several key players, including goalkeeper Christian Olivares, in preparation for a grueling schedule ahead.

Looking to the future, Dudley praised Underwood’s contributions, stating, "He's been awesome to have around. He works really good, he's got a really good attitude and he's got a super bright future." Sporting Jax will shift their focus back to league play, facing Monterey Bay FC on June 10.
