Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’ Stumbles in World Cup Opener Against Egypt

SEATTLE (AP) — Aiming to avoid a repeat of their disappointing early exit in the 2022 World Cup, Belgium faced a lackluster start in this year's tournament. The team managed only a 1-1 draw against Egypt on Monday, despite veteran striker Romelu Lukaku making an impact shortly after his late-game introduction in the 66th minute. His presence led to an equalizing own goal, but that was the extent of Belgium's offensive effort.

Coach Rudi Garcia noted the challenges of the World Cup, stating in French, “No game’s an easy game.” However, expectations were high for Belgium to secure a win against an Egyptian team that has never celebrated victory in a World Cup match. Instead, the Red Devils struggled in the first half, with Egypt's youthful speed giving them the upper hand as they took the initiative in the game.

Belgium's captain, Youri Tielemans, acknowledged the team's poor start, saying, “We know that we had a bad start in the match.” The focus now shifts to whether Belgium can leverage the experience of its remaining veterans from the so-called “Golden Generation,” which includes Lukaku, 33, and seasoned players like Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois, both 34.

Historically, Belgium has held the top spot in the FIFA rankings and achieved its best World Cup finish by securing third place in 2018. However, their performance faltered four years later in Qatar, where they were unable to progress past the group stage. Now ranked 10th, Belgium leads Group G, which features Iran, Egypt, and New Zealand.

Lukaku, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, made an immediate impact upon his return, with Tielemans emphasizing his significance despite the striker needing time to regain full fitness. Meanwhile, De Bruyne was substituted for Hans Vanaken in the 85th minute. With a record 32 teams advancing to the knockout stage in this expanded World Cup, Belgium has little margin for error as they prepare for their next match against Iran on Sunday in Inglewood, California. “We have to win against Iran, there’s no two ways around it,” Garcia insisted.
