Bermudian Springs Advances to PIAA 3A Baseball Championship with Win Over Mifflinburg
In a gripping showdown during the PIAA Class 3A semifinals, Bermudian Springs triumphed over Mifflinburg with a 3-1 victory on Monday afternoon, securing their first championship berth since 2010. The decisive moment came in the bottom of the seventh inning when pitcher Branson Diller faced Larry Murray in a tense two-out, seven-pitch at-bat.
Diller, who had already thrown six and two-thirds innings, was determined to finish the game on the mound. After a close foul ball nearly allowed a run for Mifflinburg, Diller delivered the final pitch, resulting in a groundout to shortstop Lane Hubbard. "I was making him chase the fastball," Diller commented after the game. “This feels great. It’s even more special for me and the seniors that I've been playing with our whole lives.”
The Eagles celebrated as Diller completed his seventh complete game of the season, striking out four batters and allowing six hits while only using 88 pitches. Coach Jeff Carpenter praised Diller’s reliability, noting, "When (Diller) takes the ball... you know he's going to get the out and you're going to have a low pitch count."
Gavin Reinert played a critical role in the offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate. His performance became even more vital when he doubled in the top of the seventh, bringing in Brayden Heller, who had been hit by a pitch. Jaxsyn Stottlemyer followed with another double, scoring Reinert and solidifying the Eagles' lead. "We're just that kind of team. We pick each other up,” Reinert stated, highlighting the team’s strong camaraderie.
Bermudian Springs now looks forward to the PIAA Class 3A championship game against South Park, the No. 2 seed from District 7, scheduled for June 12 at 1:30 p.m. at Penn State's Medlar Field.
