Braxton Beaty Declares Intent to Join LSU Instead of Entering MLB Draft
On Thursday, Braxton Beaty, a promising left-handed pitcher from Angleton, Texas, took to social media to announce his decision to withdraw from the upcoming Major League Baseball Draft and instead commit to Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge.
Every summer, LSU's head coach Jay Johnson often witnesses top high school talents opt to join the collegiate ranks instead of pursuing professional baseball. Beaty becomes the first player from the 2026 signing class, which includes 24 commitments and is currently ranked second by Perfect Game, to make such an announcement.
The 6-foot, 170-pound senior showcases a commendable pitching repertoire, featuring a fastball that consistently reaches the low 90s, peaking at 93 mph, along with a low 80s changeup and a curveball in the upper 70s. His ability to command the strike zone and generate swings and misses with his secondary pitches makes him an exciting prospect for the Tigers.
According to Perfect Game, Beaty was rated as the 222nd best prospect in the draft. His junior year was cut short due to Tommy John surgery, suggesting that he may have significant potential for rapid improvement in the coming years. Beaty will not be eligible for the draft again until after his junior year at LSU, allowing the program to benefit from his development over the next three seasons.
Upon joining the Tigers, Beaty will add to a left-handed pitching roster that includes Danny Lachenmayer, Cooper Williams, and Ethan Plog. Additionally, Santiago Garcia is anticipated to be drafted next month, while Jonah Aase, who redshirted last season due to injury, is also a lefty option for the team.
