Buffalo Gap Softball and Riverheads Baseball Advance to Regional Finals

On June 2, nine local teams in softball, baseball, and soccer entered the regional semifinals with aspirations of state tournament berths, but only two emerged victorious. Buffalo Gap's softball team and Riverheads' baseball squad both secured wins, allowing them to not only compete for regional titles on June 4 but also to advance to the state tournament.

Unfortunately, other teams like Waynesboro girls soccer, Stuarts Draft girls soccer and softball, Fort Defiance boys soccer and baseball, Staunton boys soccer, and Riverheads softball saw their seasons conclude on the same day. Meanwhile, in tennis, the Fort Defiance girls claimed a regional title and are set to face Randolph Henry in the Class 2 state tournament on June 5. Riverheads will also compete in Class 1 girls tennis against Lancaster, while Buffalo Gap is scheduled to play Rappahannock.

In the Region 1B softball semifinals, Buffalo Gap triumphed over Luray with a score of 5-2. Junior Elissa Caricofe ignited the offense with a solo home run that broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning. Bailey Tribble shined at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring twice, while both Faith and Rachel Showalter contributed with triples. Rachel's triple followed Caricofe's homer and helped push the score to 4-2. Starting pitcher Tribble went three innings before Rachel Showalter closed the game with four scoreless innings, combining for six strikeouts.

On the baseball side, Riverheads rallied to a 3-2 victory against Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy. Trailing 2-0 after two innings, the top-seeded Riverheads squad scored in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to claim the win. Mason Miller's run in the fifth inning, following a hit-by-pitch and a double by Jackson Berkstresser, proved decisive. Brody Phillips earned the win in relief, allowing no runs and striking out six over five innings. Riverheads will face Luray, who won 7-0 over William Campbell, for the regional title on June 4.

Other notable scores from the region included William Campbell defeating Riverheads 2-1 in softball and Strasburg's decisive victories in both softball and baseball. Local teams are gearing up for state track and field championships on June 5 and 6 at venues including James Madison University and Liberty University.
