Caitlin Clark pushed back against criticism over the timing of her back injury announcement by laying out exactly how late the decision really came.

The Indiana Fever star missed the Portland Fire game after waking up sore and trying to work through the issue on game day, but the late scratch quickly became a major online talking point.

Clark’s response was built around one detail that cut through the speculation: even her mother only found out shortly before the public did.

Caitlin Clark explains the Indiana Fever back injury timeline before facing the Portland Fire

WNBA analyst James Boyd shared Caitlin Clark’s response to the criticism around her late injury announcement before the Indiana Fever played the Portland Fire.

“Woke up Tuesday, was a little sore, texted our training staff. Then I had PT at home,” Clark began.

“Then I came down here at like one o’clock, and tried to do everything I can, got on the court, I lifted, and went through a hard workout,” she added.

The issue became controversial because Clark was not listed on the Fever’s injury report the previous day, despite missing practice to receive treatment on her back.

Indiana eventually ruled her out shortly before the game, which frustrated fans who had bought tickets expecting to watch the league’s biggest draw play against Portland.

The WNBA later warned the Fever for leaving Clark off the injury report, but Clark’s explanation made clear that she still expected to play until her body failed to respond the way she needed.

Caitlin Clark says her mother learned injury decision shortly before Indiana Fever fans

Clark used her mother’s timeline to challenge the idea that the Fever had been hiding a decision for hours.

“And I actually went back and looked, because of all these narratives that are going crazy online, about when I told my mom I wasn’t gonna play the game,” the Fever star continued.

“4:47, you guys found out at 5:20. So one of the most important people of my life found out 40 minutes before you guys,” Clark concluded.

That detail mattered because the online reaction had moved beyond frustration and into theories about load management, team strategy, and whether Indiana had misled fans.

Clark’s point was that the decision was not some long-planned move kept from the public. It was a late medical call after treatment, a home PT session, an arena workout, and a final read on whether she could trust her back enough to play.

The Fever still faced scrutiny because WNBA rules require clearer injury reporting, and the warning from the league showed that the process was not handled perfectly. But Clark’s story also showed why the criticism became too sweeping.
