Cape and Islands Teams Face Off in High-Stakes Playoffs
On Tuesday, six teams from the Cape and Islands competed in various playoff matches, determining who would move forward in the MIAA state tournament and who would conclude their season.
In Girls Tennis, Division 3, the No. 12 seed Weston pulled off an upset against the No. 5 seed Monomoy, winning the match 3-2. The Sharks, who finished the season with a 17-3 record, had previously triumphed over No. 28 Sandwich in the Round of 32.
In another Girls Tennis match in Division 4, the No. 10 seed Lenox Memorial defeated the No. 7 seed Bourne, with a score of 4-1. The Canalmen, who ended their season with a record of 12-9, lost in their second postseason game. Notably, the first doubles team of Sofia Halunen and Ella Swierkowski managed to win a close match against Reeva Patel and Bella Giardina, finishing 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
The Boys Tennis matches also saw the No. 3 Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion team sweep the No. 14 seed Bourne 5-0 in Division 4. The Canalmen, with an overall record of 11-10, were eliminated after previously defeating No. 19 Mashpee in the Round of 32.
In Boys Volleyball, Division 1 saw the No. 3 seed Natick sweep the No. 14 seed Barnstable 3-0. This marked just the third time this season that the Red Hawks (16-5) were unable to secure a victory. They had earlier overcome No. 19 Winchester in the Round of 32.
The baseball matchup in Division 3 featured No. 10 Gloucester defeating No. 23 Nauset 2-0. The Warriors, with a 7-12 record, narrowly missed an upset, despite Emmet Blatz’s impressive performance on the mound, where he struck out 15 batters and allowed no earned runs. Nauset had previously advanced by beating No. 42 Greater Lawrence Tech in the preliminary round.
In Boys Lacrosse, the No. 8 seed Bourne/Mashpee secured a 9-7 victory over the No. 9 seed Hamilton-Wenham, advancing to the Round of 8 after their second playoff win.
