Carter Bryant Makes NBA Finals Debut as Rookie with Spurs

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - MAY 28: In a thrilling Game Six of the NBA Western Conference Finals, Carter Bryant of the San Antonio Spurs showcased his athleticism with a powerful dunk against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Spurs clinched their spot in the NBA Finals by defeating the defending champions 111-103 in a decisive Game Seven.

This marks the first time since 2004 that an Arizona alumni has reached the NBA Finals in their rookie season, following in the footsteps of Luke Walton with the Los Angeles Lakers. Richard Jefferson also achieved this milestone with the New Jersey Nets in 2002.

With Bryant's achievement, a total of 12 consecutive seasons now feature at least one Arizona Wildcat in the NBA Finals. Last year, T.J. McConnell and Bennedict Mathurin represented the Wildcats, although they fell short of victory. The last Wildcat to win the championship was Aaron Gordon, who triumphed with the Denver Nuggets in 2023.

Drafted as the 14th overall pick by the Spurs in the previous year’s NBA Draft, Bryant's rookie journey has been eventful. He participated in the NBA dunk contest earlier this season, where he finished as a runner-up to fellow Arizona player Keshad Johnson. Despite facing challenges during the conference finals, Bryant exhibited resilience, responding to coaching critiques and making significant contributions on the court.

In Game Seven, he played only three minutes but managed to score against an NBA All-Star, further demonstrating his potential. His impactful dunk in Game Six also played a crucial role in forcing a decisive seventh game.

As the Spurs prepare for the Finals against the New York Knicks, Bryant's experience against this team has been limited, having played just 11 minutes without scoring in the regular season matchups. His first chance to shine on the NBA’s grandest stage will arrive next Wednesday in Game One.
