Chase Elliott Advocates for Kyle Busch to Receive NASCAR's Most Popular Driver Award
LEBANON – Chase Elliott is following in his father's footsteps by making a poignant gesture in memory of a fellow NASCAR driver. On May 30, Elliott confirmed that he has removed himself from consideration for the NASCAR Most Popular Driver award for 2026, hoping that Kyle Busch, who passed away on May 21, will take home the honor.
During a media session at Nashville Superspeedway before the Sports Illustrated Resorts 250, Elliott expressed his belief in Busch's deserving nature for the accolade, stating, "I just think it's one of those things that I think Kyle is a guy that really deserves something of an award like that. I think he's a guy that has had a lot of fans over the course of his career."
By stepping aside, Elliott clarified that he isn't suggesting he would have won had he remained on the ballot; rather, he aims to contribute to a significant moment for Busch's legacy. Elliott has been recognized with the award from 2018 to 2025.
Chase's father, Bill Elliott, also demonstrated a similar act of respect in 2001 when he withdrew from the ballot following the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr., who ultimately won that year’s award. Bill Elliott had previously secured the title from 1991 to 2000, and once more in 2002.
Addressing the reactions from fans, Elliott remarked, "I'm aware of the boos, and that was fun. I think he deserves to win the award, truthfully. I don't know what's going to happen. I wanted to throw my support to that."
This heartfelt tribute highlights the camaraderie and respect among drivers within the NASCAR community.
