Colt Keith Powers Tigers to Victory Over Astros with Three Home Runs
Houston – The Detroit Tigers triumphed over the Houston Astros on Monday night, securing a 9-3 win in the first of a three-game series at Daikin Park. However, the victory was marred by concerns over potential injuries to two key players.
Prior to the game, right-hander Troy Melton was unexpectedly sidelined due to back discomfort, forcing the team to adjust their pitching plans. In the second inning, second baseman Gleyber Torres experienced discomfort after a swing, appearing to aggravate a previously sustained injury. Torres, who underwent surgery for a sports hernia during the offseason and dealt with a left oblique strain earlier in the season, left fans and teammates anxious about the severity of the situation.
Despite the injury woes, the Tigers showcased a remarkable offensive performance, characterized by a mix of strikeouts and power hitting. The team struck out 18 times, a season-high, but also managed to collect 11 hits, including five home runs. Colt Keith was the star of the night, hitting three home runs and driving in six runs, marking new career highs. His impressive night included two home runs to right field, with the first soaring 411 feet into the Astros' bullpen, and a third shot to the Crawford Boxes in left field.
Rookie Kevin McGonigle contributed with his fifth homer of the season in the second inning, while Spencer Torkelson launched his 12th home run, going back-to-back with Keith in the third inning. The Tigers’ first three home runs and nine of their strikeouts came against Astros starter Kai-Wei Teng, who struggled with control, walking and hitting multiple batters while managing to strike out three.
On the defensive side, Dillon Dingler made an impact with his speed, scoring after a hit that rolled past the right fielder and on a passed ball. The Tigers’ bullpen stepped up in the absence of Melton, with Drew Anderson striking out five batters in 2.2 innings and Jacob Waguespack allowing two home runs but recovering to pitch a clean fourth inning. Tyler Holton continued his impressive streak with five consecutive scoreless appearances, while Will Vest and Enmanuel De Jesus rounded out the game, ensuring the team held onto their lead.
This victory marks a critical moment for the Tigers as they navigate the challenges of injuries while aiming for a strong finish to the season.
