Colts Evaluate Backup Center Options Following Pinter's Departure
As the Indianapolis Colts gear up for the upcoming season, the team is left pondering who will step in as the backup center behind Tanor Bortolini. This position was previously held by Danny Pinter, who has since joined the Baltimore Ravens as a free agent.
The Colts currently have three players listed as centers on their roster. Geno VanDeMark and Josh Kreutz are both undrafted free agents, while Jimmy Morrissey has been with the NFL since 2021 but has only seen limited action, accumulating just 318 snaps on offense throughout his career.
Another potential solution could emerge from the guard position, specifically with Dalton Tucker. Jake Arthur of Roundtable Sports, who closely follows the Colts, noted in his recent 53-man roster projection that Tucker might be the ideal candidate for the backup center role. "Farmer's addition allows the Colts to kick Tucker further inside to backup center, where they needed help with Danny Pinter's departure," Arthur stated.
Tucker has logged 615 offensive snaps over his first two seasons, primarily at right guard, with some experience at left guard as well. However, he has no experience at center either in the NFL or during his college career. Nevertheless, given his familiarity with Shane Steichen's offensive system, having been part of it for three seasons, Tucker could very well be the most viable option to support Bortolini.
Training camp will be crucial in determining Tucker's ability to adapt to the potential shift to center, where the pace of play is quicker, and the player must manage pre-snap calls and protection adjustments. As the Colts continue their preparations, the search for a reliable backup center remains a top priority.
